FUNDAMENTALS OF ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA

This week intensive is designed for all levels of students, those who want to learn, deconstruct and breakdown the asanas of Ashtanga's Primary Series.

While the primary sequence main focus is forward-bending and hip-opening, most students like the physical challenges that come along with its many interesting twists and turns throughout its journey, in and out of 60 plus postures.

Each morning class you will be verbally guided through the primary series, learning all of its variations and full expressions of asana.

The afternoon classes will break down the asanas one-by-one, plus covering all the sub topics like breath, bandha, drishti and vinyasa.

Course Highlights:
• A detailed examination and analysis of yoga asana, using three (3) main influences: architecture and alignment from the BKS Iyengar method infused into the movement based vinyasa method of T Krishnamacharya & Sri K Pattabhi Jois. Along with breath, vinyasa, bandha, and drishti will be the focal points of the asana component.

• We will cover anatomy and human physiology with its relation to asana and its specific effects on the nervous and organic systems.

• We will explore the logic and art of asana sequencing, plus instruction on how to wisely and safely adjust, modify and adapt specific asanas for all levels of students.

• Learn how to create and maintain a personal asana and meditation practice. Plus hatha, restorative and therapeutic asana systems that compliment the vinyasa practice.

• Additional topics may include: yoga history, philosophy, Patanjali’s yoga sutras, modern styles and trends, & healing skills

    Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Background:
The Sanskrit word Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement”, the popularity and spread of Vinyasa Yoga came from two (2) main influencial Guru`s of our past; Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and K. Pattabhi Jois.
Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (November 18, 1888 – February 28, 1989) was an Indian yoga teacher, ayurvedic healer and scholar. Often referred to as "The Father of Modern Yoga," Krishnamacharya is widely regarded as one of the most influential yoga teachers of the 20th century and is credited with the revival of hatha yoga. Pattabhi Jois began his yoga studies in 1927 at the age of 12 with Krishnamacharya, and by 1948 had established the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute for teaching the specific yoga practice known as Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga is named after the eight limbs of yoga mentioned in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. "Power yoga" and "vinyasa yoga" are generic terms that may refer to any type of vigorous yoga exercise derived from Ashtanga yoga.

Jamie is registered with the Canadian Yoga Alliance at the CYA-RYT 500 level.

Yoga found its way into Jamie’s life as a method of injury prevention while training for Triathlon and Ironman throughout university. Having made Triathlon Canada’s National team twice (junior and age-grouper), the motivation to race and compete slowly changed its focus from a health regimen, to a more holistic approach to health and happiness through yoga asana and meditation.

Jamie has been intensively studying Hatha, Ashtanga and the Iyengar systems of yoga ever since. Currently his yoga teaching and philosophy draws wisdom from both the Ashtanga and Iyengar systems.
